Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Maricopa County Sheriff's Office maintains a Human Smuggling Unit around 15 bodies strong. The HSU's main responsibility is the enforcement of a county law that allows deputies to prosecute human smuggling, and conspiracy to commit human smuggling as local felonies; rather than turning over suspected pollos and coyotes to Federal agents.
